What: This is a beginning biblical Hebrew class (no prior knowledge of Hebrew required) that is intended to teach students to read the Hebrew Old Testament with comprehension and to equip them to grow in their fluency after the course is over. A Communicative Language Teaching (CLT) approach will be utilized in order to create the most efficient and long-lasting language-learning experience. CLT means that the target language will be taught in the target language via a variety of activities that provide meaningful, real-life communication. Second Language Acquisition research shows that your brain is able to process language must faster and retain it much longer this way. Even if you have studied Hebrew before, this class is for you as, since you will internalize the language so that it becomes “living” inside you. Be prepared to have fun, move around, play with toys, and laugh a lot! Spouses and children are welcome!
Expectations: With consistent attendance and diligent work, the student can expect to:
- Internalize a core of the language through listening and speaking that will lend itself to more fluent reading abilities.
- Comprehend all the basic components of biblical Hebrew grammar (the equivalent of one year of college/seminary-level Hebrew).
- Read the book of Jonah with fluency and comprehension.
- Memorize several Bible verses in Hebrew.
- Talk about the Hebrew text in Hebrew (i.e., basic comprehension and interpretive questions).
- Think in Hebrew.
What NOT to Expect:
- You will NOT be able to read your entire Hebrew Bible fluently! Learning a language is no small task and it takes years to become proficient. However, this class will lay a solid foundation and equip you to become a life-long learner of Hebrew.
- You will NOT learn the language simply by coming to class and doing no work throughout the week. In order for this course to be advantageous, the student should expect to put in at least two hours of study per week outside of class. Half an hour a day, four days a week is ideal, though the more you put into it, the more you will get out of it.
